Year 9

Materials

This course allows students to work with wood, metal, plastics and composites, either separately or in combination, to build solutions to teacher-directed and design-based activities. 

Design tasks and projects will be different in each course, allowing for students to complete two semesters of the Materials course if they wish. 

Students are encouraged to use the design process to create unique projects either for themselves, family or community. Skills such as welding, vacuum forming and laser engraving, glass fusing and 3D printing will be introduced in a range of projects. 

Areas of study: 

  • the design process 
  • drawing skills and techniques 
  • safe working practices 
  • familiarity with a selected range of tools 
  • basic knowledge of technologies and materials
