Modern History

ATAR & General
Studying a Modern History course will enable students to become critical thinkers and help inform their judgements and actions in a rapidly changing world. Students are exposed to a variety of historical sources, including government papers, extracts from newspapers, letters, diaries, photographs, cartoons, paintings, graphs and secondary sources, in order to determine the cause and effect, and the motives and forces influencing people and events.

Students who choose Modern History will complete depth-studies and investigate time periods such as:

  • The American Experience (1907 – 1941)
  • Nazi Germany (1914-1945)
  • Russia and the Soviet Union (1914-1945)
  • The French Revolution, Napoleon, and the Empire (1789)

Pathways Beyond School
Studying history will develop students’ critical reasoning and analytical skills, including the capacity for solving problems and thinking creatively. History graduates are therefore valued by a wide range of employers and organisations.
